BETHANY BEACH FARMERS’ MARKET – August 3, 2025
The weather forecasters got it right, and we had a perfect 10 of a day for our 10th BBFM of the season. It couldn’t have been any nicer, and many customers enjoyed themselves and all that our vendors had to offer.
We have mentioned this in years past; so hopefully you are already doing this: Washing produce is crucial for removing dirt, bacteria, and potential pesticide residues, which can help prevent foodborne illnesses. It’s a simple step that significantly reduces the risk of consuming harmful contaminants.
To safely wash produce, rinse it thoroughly under cool, running water. Use your hands or a soft brush to gently scrub firm fruits and vegetables. Avoid using soap or detergent. For berries and delicate produce, a gentle rinse under running water is sufficient.
Mushrooms are different though. Stop at Davidson’s at our BBFM, and they’ll be happy to explain. To properly clean mushrooms, gently brush away any visible dirt with a soft brush or damp paper towel. For more stubborn dirt, a quick rinse under cold running water is acceptable, but avoid soaking them, and dry them thoroughly afterwards.
We have fun people watching, and this week Kay captured a family of four with 2 darling little girls wearing hand-smocked dresses from their grandmother in Charleston who found them at a thrift shop; what a score. One of the little girls was shy and reluctant to have her picture taken. The little boy wore blue seersucker shorts; that’s a true sign of summer.

Recipe of the Week
This isn’t a recipe as there are so many ways to do it, but you must make a tomato caprese salad with all the beautiful tomatoes that are plentiful now. Fresh basil is also easy to find. I usually have some sprigs cut and keep in a clear vase in my kitchen window; it will eventually root. I just snip a few leaves when needed. Arrange as artfully as you wish. Use fresh mozzarella that you can cut into slices or use the little pearl-size balls. Use whatever dressing you like. I just sprinkle with balsamic vinegar; some like EVOO as well. It’s my favorite salad of the summer.
