BETHANY BEACH FARMERS’ MARKET – JUNE 22, 2025
Today we had the largest turnout so far. The hot, hot temperatures didn’t deter our customers. Those of us “of an age” will remember this: “Hot Fun in the Summertime” is a song by Sly & The Family Stone, released in 1969. Are you humming along now?
Our customers and volunteers found lots of goodies to make their day fun.
WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT WEEK
Bennett Orchards – Blueberries sold out by 8:45 a.m.; so come early if you want to score this delicious summer treat. Bennett Blueberry Varieties
Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms – Mushrooms, mushrooms, mushrooms: Portobello, Shitake, Cremini, Pom-Poms, Oyster, Hen of the Woods, King Oyster, and Lion’s Mane. Unami seasoning, mushroom powder, and dried mushroom soup mix.
Derby Mill Farm – Many varieties of beautiful bouquets of native flowers. Ask them about the discount on refilling a mini vase that you bought the week before.
Dittmar Family Farms – Ground lamb, radishes, including French Breakfast Radishes, broccoli, beets, and more. Unfortunately, with the extreme heat forecast this week, some lettuces, like arugula, won’t be available next week. Lettuce is a cool-season crop and thrives in cooler temperatures. Warm weather can stress the plant, causing it to “bolt” prematurely. Bolting is a natural process where a plant shifts its focus from leaf production to seed production.
Herbs, Spice & Everything Nice – A wide variety of beautiful herbs and house plants. Radishes, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and heirloom tomatoes which are always a treat.
Honey Bee Lake Apiary – Honey, Honey balm, pies, sweet breads, jams, and more.
Jackie Blues – Live Blue Crabs, Fresh picked Crab Meat, Crab Cakes, Crab Salad.
Lavender Fields – Lavender Hand Sanitizer, Lavender Honey, Natural Hand-crafted Soaps, Bath Salts, Lotions, Bug Spray, and more.
Old World Breads – Handcrafted Breads: Ancient Grain, Baguette, Cranberry Walnut, Italian, Garlic Italian, Olive Italian, Cinnamon Raisin Swirl, Rosemary Focaccia, Rye, Sourdough, Wheat Sourdough, Orange Cardamom, Vienna Pan Loaf
Rolls: Italian, Multigrain, OWB Rolls, Brioche, Kaiser
Pastries: Cinnamon Coffee Cake, Cinnamon Roll, Danish, Donuts, Mini Apple Spice Cake, Pastry Tart, Blueberry Scone, Maple Pecan Scone, Lemon Rosemary Asiago Scone, Sticky Bun, Frangipane Mini Cake
Cookies: Almond bliss (GF), Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin, Brown Butter, Molasses
Croissants: Almond, Chocolate, Ham & Gruyere
Savory: Seasonal Soups, Dog Biscuits, Crostini, Soft Pretzel, Lavash Crackers
Today the line formed on the Pennsylvania Avenue sidewalk. Don’t let it intimidate you as those who were patient only waited around 10 minutes. The staff is very efficient.
Pereyra Farms – Kale, maybe asparagus, broccoli, squash, onions, eggs. Later in the season melons, cantaloupe, corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes will be added.
Story Hill Farm – Locally raised Pork: ground sausage, bacon, scrapple, and locally raised Beef: ground beef, kebab cubes, rib-eyes. Peanut butter, Henlopen Sea Salts, and eggs. Ask about their new calf. Story Hill is opening the mud pits to their porkers to beat the heat; that would be a sight to see. Pigs need mud for temperature regulation and skin protection. Mud wallows help them cool down in hot weather, acting as a natural “air conditioner” as the mud dries and evaporates. It also provides a barrier against sunburn and insects like flies and mosquitoes.
Wimbrow Farms – Squash, including 8-Ball squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, onions, corn, beets, flowers, flower plants; and later in the season melons and cantaloupes will appear. Harry Wimbrow has a special, mystery eggplant that is perfect for making fried dipping strips. Harry says that extreme heat, especially without rain, causes heat stress and retards the ripening process. Too much of a good thing isn’t always good.
