Cloud cover, but no rain, made for a most comfortable Market Day! We had a strong, steady stream of shoppers all morning, and continuous lines at both Old World Breads and Bennett’s Orchards. We appreciate everyone’s good-natured patience – the great news was both vendors had plenty of product so as not to disappoint!
We may not see blueberries again from Bennett’s Orchards, but peaches are in full swing right now – as always, shop early!
Harry, of Wimbrow Farms, reports that nighttime temperatures are unseasonably cool which slows ripening. Even so, he expects cantaloupes next week, and watermelons are not far behind!
Corn and tomatoes will start coming in like gang busters! Along with Wimbrow Farms, you will find a great variety of beautiful local produce at Ficner’s Family Farms. Our one Certified Organic farm, Herbs, Spice… has an eclectic array, including Shishito peppers that Dave likens to playing Russian Roulette – you never know when you’re going to get that hot-as-heck pepper!
Here’s a refreshing summer salad to feed a crowd:
Garden Cucumber Salad
4 medium cucumbers, cut into ½ inch pieces
2 medium sweet red peppers, chopped
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
I cup crumbled, reduced-fat feta cheese
½ cup finely chopped red onion
⅓ cup olive oil
¼ cup lemon juice
1 Tbsp Greek seasoning
In a large bowl, combine cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, cheese and onion. In a small bowl, whisk together oil, lemon juice and Greek seasoning. Pour over veggies and toss to coat.
Does the Bethany Market have flowers? No fewer than 6 of our vendors bring beautiful, budget-friendly bouquets! Story Hill Farm and River Cottage both have seas of delicate native flowers in beyond-belief colors! River Cottage’s Beebalms are coming into bloom. With their fragrant leaves, reminiscent of bergamot orange, they – like so many native plant – naturally attract bees and promote local eco health! What is lovelier than a fresh bouquet for your guests’ room, and don’t forget – the dinner table isn’t properly set until the flowers are in place!
Come see us next Sunday!
