Was it hot enough to fry an egg on asphalt? As a matter of fact, it was! However, not recommended for consumption! Our staunch patrons braved the heat and came out in droves as usual – our hats are off to you! You are the key to our Market’s success!
Once again, our farmers toiled under the broiling sun to harvest and bring the freshest possible local produce to sell. Bennett Orchards didn’t sell out until after 10:00, which means approximately one zillion and one peaches changed hands. It’s a great year for peaches, and we expect plenty more, for many weeks to come!
Tons of tomatoes, corn, squash, and sumptuous melons abound. Between Ficner Farms, Wimbrow Farms, and Herbs, Spice… all your produce needs will be easily satisfied. It is truly Vegan Season!
Two easy peasy sides are:
Grilled Tomatoes and Grilled Zucchini
For either tomatoes or zucchinis, halve lengthwise. Drizzle cut side with olive oil. Sprinkle with pepper and Henlopen Sea Salt. Rip your favorite herbs from your garden and add to top (basil, oregano, parsley, etc.)
Place vegetables – cut side up – on pre-heated medium-high grill until it starts to blacken, about 4 minutes. Flip and grill for an additional 3 minutes or desired doneness.
Dessert
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
1 peach, peeled, pitted and sliced
2 big glugs caramel sauce
Generous sprinkling of Henlopen Sea Salt
Let age 5 minutes (if you can!) Enjoy but don’t let it melt!
If you prefer, Honey Bee Lake Apiary and Old World Breads always have pies, cakes, strudels, and cookies galore – all to die for!
Both Story Hill Farms and Wimbrow Farms have beautiful blackberries right now. Grab them fast! They won’t last!!
We’d like to congratulate Ron (Board Member) and Carole (super volunteer) Calef on celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary this weekend (Yes, their brood was in town!) Carole’s patience and endurance are to be admired!
We’ve had some challenges with Mother Nature this season – this week’s oppressive heat and humidity tested our endurance. However, everyone seemed to agree “it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be!” Barring lightning, we will be there next Sunday – come join us!!!
